Orlando Dencas & Susy DeHorta
Key West, FL

"From the moment we walked in, everyone - reception, security, and the ER assistants - welcomed us like family. We were brought in very fast which, being from Miami, isn't something we were used to"

Orlando Dencas and Susy DeHorta were enjoying an early evening walk recently in Key West, where they have lived for the past four years, when Orlando fell and injured his leg. Susy drove him immediately to Lower Keys Medical Center's emergency room where, under the care of Dr. Kimberley Jones, the team evaluated and promptly treated him.

"From the moment we walked in, everyone - reception, security, and the ER assistants - welcomed us like family. We were brought in very fast which, being from Miami, isn't something we were used to," Susy said.

Orlando received 5 stitches and his caregivers provided instructions on how to care for his injury. He was in and out of the hospital in about an hour.

"They told him what to do, what not to do, and they took care of me, comforting me about my concerns. Dr. Jones and everyone took time with us so we could ask all of our questions," Susy added. "The attention you receive at Lower Keys Medical Center is a different experience than you get in big cities like Miami."

Susy, a retired law enforcement officer, contacted the hospital to share her experience and thanks.

"My Italian parents taught me to always let people know when you are grateful. Orlando is doing well with no leg pain." she said.

The couple has been able to resume their favorite activities, cooking Italian and Cuban food and watching cooking and fishing shows. They plan to return to Italy for a visit in 2026.

"We both highly recommend Lower Keys Medical Center," Susy said.
